GCSE Advice
#
You should think about the types of career in which you might be interested and then choose subjects which make them possible.
Many top universities take note of GCSE grades when considering applications, therefore you should choose subjects in which you expect a fair degree of success. It is very misguided, for whatever reason, to attempt a subject in which you cannot hope to gain a good pass.
It is wise to choose a broad range of subjects even if you want a specific career path as a broad range shows a varied set of skills.
You might consider taking a subject you have not studied before, in which case you need to discuss this with the relevant subject staff.
You should attend as many careers talks as possible so that you are kept informed.
Sciences
You are required to choose one of the following options:
Route 1: Biology, Chemistry and Physics
(ie 3 separate GCSE subjects with 3 separate grades)
Route 2: Coordinated Science
(all 3 Science subjects combined to give a joint mark for 2 GCSEs)
You should choose route 1 if:
- you are currently achieving highly in both Science and Mathematics
- you have a particular interest and aptitude for Science
- you are comfortable with reducing your other option choices to four subjects
- you are considering careers of a scientific or analytical nature.
You should choose route 2 if:
- you wish to maintain a greater breadth of study at GCSE without affecting future sixth form choices.
Both option 1 and option 2 allow progression onto A Level Science courses if the grades achieved at GCSE support this.
It is important that you discuss these two options with your Science teacher.
Music
It is recommended that you should be attempting at least Grade Four at the start of Year 10 in your chosen instrument to take a GCSE Music course.
PE
In line with the School’s commitment to active lifestyles, all students attend Core PE sessions. Within these sessions students can opt to take the Sports Leader Award.
