Life at the Nursery & Pre School

Girls and boys join the Nursery from 1+ and Pre School from 3+ Our youngest pupils enjoy a stimulating environment, beautiful grounds and well-resourced buildings. By learning through play, children are encouraged to develop a love of learning that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

We provide the children with adventure, stability, security and the confidence to express themselves, whilst the staff are committed and dedicated. Nursery, Pre School and Preparatory have achieved the highest rating available in our latest ISI Inspection Report.

The Nursery gates open at 7.30 for all children in the Nursery and Pre School. Each room is prepared for ‘free play’ for the first hour of the day. The Nursery staff set up the rooms in accordance with the weekly planning, focusing on the children’s interests combined with the weekly topic.

Each child’s drinking cup is available at the start of the day and topped up with fresh water throughout the day. At around 8.20am the staff assist the children with toileting and handwashing and then they are led to the Nursery dining hall for breakfast at around 8.30am.

“The overall effectiveness of the Early Years provision is outstanding” – ISI Report 2016

The children are offered a variety of cereals including Weetabix, Shreddies, Cheerios and Rice Crispies, followed by toast. The children are also offered milk or water to drink. From 9am the children are led back to their rooms, and the staff have a planned circle time activity whereby the children sit in a circle led by a practitioner and, depending on the age group, there will be a story book read, nursery rhymes sung, ‘show and tell’ (the children in the older age group can share their weekend news or talk about a favourite toy that they have brought in). Circle time usually lasts for about 20 minutes.

The morning activities commence around 9.30. Staff complete focused activities and observations on the children. The children have outside play every morning, where they can ride bikes, scooters, play in the mud kitchen or in the trim trail.

Lunchtime commences from 11.30am. The children are given a well-balanced meal, catering to each child’s dietary requirements.

From 12.30pm the younger children will have a sleep, which will take place in their rooms, on sleep mats and sheets laid out on the floor. The older children will have a story time followed by outdoor play.

At 3.30pm the children are led into the Nursery dining hall for their afternoon tea, which consists of crumpets, sandwiches, sausage rolls, pizzas and fruit. Milk is also offered to each child. The remainder of the day is devoted to free play, outside play and children’s choice. The parents arrive at various times up to 6pm to collect their children.

Pre School has an additional Early Years teacher who delivers maths and phonics sessions on a daily basis to further enhance the children’s learning.
