Pre School Makes Charcoal

Pre School girls enjoyed a morning around the bonfire where they took part in some autumn activities including making charcoal. Each girl put a short length of willow into a biscuit tin; then, when it was full, the lid was put on and it was placed in the bonfire.  It wasn’t long before we could see smoke coming out of the hole in the top of the tin and we wondered what was happening to the wood inside. After the tin had finished smoking and had cooled down we looked inside to find that the sticks had turned black and were ready to use for some writing and drawing. Some of us were able to write our name using the charcoal or make marks and smudges on our paper.
