I have a dream…
Today is Martin Luther King Jr Day – a national holiday in America. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion prefects, Michaela, Jovien and Jessica, created and delivered an interactive presentation to the whole school. Dressed as the civil rights leader, Jessica delivered part of King’s well-known speech, ‘I have a dream’. The prefects helped the students to imagine how unfair it was for many black people in 1960s America by asking everyone in PE kit to stand and enjoy imaginary treats whilst those in school uniform were excluded from privileges.
Everyone stood up and marched as the whole school re-enacted the 1963 march on Washington DC. The prefects closed the assembly with a song by Elvis Presley, ‘If I can Dream’.
